Pigtails are a common method used to ground cable
shields. Pigtails ground the cable shield through a conductor that is
connected at one end to the shield and at the other end to the ground.
Pigtails are typically fabricated from circular wires, flat , or woven wire braid.
The shield-end of the pigtail is typically soldered or
crimped to the shield. The ground-end of the pigtail is often terminated
to a ring lug, which is fastened to the ground conductor, but any suitable
method for making an electrical connection between the pigtail and ground may be
used.
Note: The effectiveness of the cable shield may be
adversely affected by the pigtail since the pigtail may introduce significant
impedance between the shield and the ground conductor. More:
