A strand is a single conductor in a woven wire shield.  Strands most commonly have a circular cross section, but may be flat conductors.  Strands are bundled together to form stranded wires.  Strands are braided by machine into a hollow tubular cross section to make cable shields or rectangular cross section to make ground straps.
